Die Technician III

Position Summary:  Responsible for tool and die repair.

Qualifications Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of eight years’ experience working with metal stamping and/or mold dies
  • Alternate experience of two to four years’ vocational schooling and training for tooling along with three to four years’ experience with stamping or mold dies
  • Proficient in metric system
  • Intermediate math skills

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot problems with dies and determine ways to make improvements to dies in collaboration with the engineering department
  • Repair dies
  • Preventative maintenance
  • 5S daily duties

Non Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned
  • Train Die Technician I and Die Technician II when needed

Success Factors/Job Competencies:

  • Basic computer skills
  • Intermediate math skills
  • Proficient with metric system
  • Ability to read a die drawings and/or blue prints
  • Ability to disassemble stamping dies without assistance
  • Ability to set punches on a flat surface and/or a cam unit, including aerial cam with minimal assistance
  • Ability to hand grind a welded block back in with precisely with no mistakes
  • Ability to weld up a tool steel block properly with multiple layers of weld
  • Ability to use arc welding rod with different types of material
  • Ability to weld on any material with all types of welding (ie. mig, tig, arc) without assistance
  • Ability to repair die from start to finish without assistance
  • Ability to heat treat different types of tool steels and use heat treat oven
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with stamping dies independently and in a timely manner
  • Proficient in using all shop equipment & shop tools without assistance
  • Ability to stand throughout shift
  • Ability to set up cushion pins and draw die in trial press
  • Ability to set up draw die and spot in inside trial press without assistance
  • Knowledge of a variety of tool steels and what/how they are used
  • Ability to read a die drawing or blueprint to determine materials used in a die
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds with assistance
  • Ability to manage time and meet deadlines on die repair
  • Ability to work overtime when required
  • Ability to work in a fast pace work environment

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to see, hear, talk, stand, walk, use hands to finger, reach with hands and arms, reach overhead, handle and feel objects, use tools and controls, kneel, stoop, bend, twist, turn, push, pull, balance, and lift up to 70 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment and Conditions:  The plant environment noise level is loud.  Although the plant is climate controlled, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.  PPE consisting of a hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, long sleeves, and ear plugs must be worn at all times when entering and working in the plant. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving equipment, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, dust, vibration, and weld sparks/flash when welding. The Die Maintenance Technician is assigned a fire resistant (FR), shirt that must be worn at all times when welding.  Gloves must be worn while handling parts.
